A to Z Blogger Challenge: Letter J

When a movie is so jarring you have nightmares for weeks, avoid certain spots and the tune from the movie permeates your brain for a lifetime, it's worth mentioning.

Jaws is the reason I won't stay in an ocean for long periods. It's why I even check a pool sometimes before I jump in...you know, just in case.

All I have to say is...
da da

da da

da da
dada
dada
dadadadadadadadada
ATTACK!!!!!

And you all know what I'm talking about don't you?

Thanks, Steven Spielberg, for a movie we won't soon forget!

Do you have a movie that has left a lasting impression on you?

  1. There is a movie called The Woman in White that gave me reoccurring nightmares for YEARS! On the plus side, The Illusionist still blows my mind when I see it.

  3. It's one of the reasons I can't forgive Spielberg, someone I can't stand. The book of Jaws, by Peter Benchley, was much more about the immorality of local politicians and corruption than about the shark hunt (which was a far more low-key affair). Spielberg dramatised it and made it an excuse for mindless idiots to murder Great Whites to the extent that they are endangered today - but Spielberg is a time-serving opportunist, as is clear to anyone who's followed his career, so one shouldn't be surprised by that. I find it telling that Benchley himself later became an outspoken shark conservationist.

  4. This one! It's release date was on my birthday and for months ahead of time, the movie previews showed a black screen, with that iconic music, then flashed the date: Coming, June 16th.

So forever and ever, Jaws is burned in my brain as MY Birthday movie.

  5. We still love JAWS! My whole family can quote the movie. "We're gonna need a bigger boat." I saw this at the movies when I was young...scared me to pieces.

"Show me the way to go home..."

  7. Clockwork Orange traumatised me for YEARS. I didn't even finish the movie and it still gave me nightmares for a very long time.

  9. I saw Cocoon in the theatre with my parents, and was beyond freaked out by the scene where the woman sheds her skin and reveals herself as some alien being. When I was about 12 years old and at my dad's boss's annual holiday party, the teenager babysitter and I were watching tv downstairs while the adults were out, and guess what movie came on tv! The babysitter thought it was so neat how she stepped out of her skin, but I was once again totally freaked out!

Return to Wizard of Oz had me so freaked out with the decapitated heads that I actually had to be carried out of the theatre. And when I was 17, my goofy supposed sociology teacher (who's a topic all in himself!) showed us the 30-minute French documentary Night and Fog. The scene of the decapitated heads scared me so badly I went back to using a nightlight, and now immediately look away and feel my stomach turning when I see a picture of a decapitated head. He never even warned us about how graphic it would get or let anyone leave the room, and actually forwarded it by saying, "I've got a real treat for you." Many of the historical books I've written take place during the Shoah, and deal with the aftereffects in the post-liberation years, but I've never written about anything so horrifying, graphic, and macabre in all the years I've been writing about that time period!

  10. Ah, Leigh did a post on Jaws too. I don't remember that movie scaring me that much.

  11. Eden Lake. *shivers* About a week after seeing that I saw a group of youths on bikes, and then I had to ask them to move so that I could get my car past them; I was shaking! I haven't dared my second viewing of that yet!

    Happy A-Z!

  13. The Jaws music is certainly effective!

When I was at school it was a status symbol to have watched scary movies. The original Alien stands out for me - it's the suspense.

  14. Haha. Check the pool :)

I don't have issues with sharks, but I do with jellyfish. My mom got stung by one last summer when we were at Myrtle Beach, turns out she's deathly allergic to them.

I'm not sure if it runs in the family and i don't really want to find out...

  16. I grew up by the ocean, swimming in it every day in the summer. Jaws kept me out of the ocean for years. I never go in without hearing those notes.
